that follow the points, the average score of the
wines served will be 94+!!

Kelley Cellars Wine and Cheese Shop

Dear Friends,

Four years ago, Karen and I set out with a dream of establishing a wine shop that was unlike any other: a warm, comfortable environment where employees would get to know customers; a selection that included wines all of very good caliber at fair prices; a fun series of wine tastings

and wine and food pairings; a community feel to the shop. Both of us, along with our stellar employees Liz, Jennifer, Kim, Suzi, and Michele, think we were very successful. Many of you have shared the same feelings. For that, and for the relationships we’ve established, we’re very thankful.

Regrettably, we will be closing our shop at the end of April. From now until then, we will have all wines, cheese, and accessories discounted 20-50%.  We’ll continue our Saturday tastings from 2-5PM as long as we have the wine to sell!  This weekend (March 21-22, 2009), among the many bargains will be an $8 Spanish Garnacha sure to earn high accolades from Robert Parker, and a Zin that would be the hit of any barbecue.

Thank you for your business and for giving us the opportunity to get to know you!

P.S.  Don't forget to redeem any gift certificates outstanding!

Cheers!

Greg, Karen, Jennifer, Kim, Liz, & Suzi

Welcome to Kelley Cellars! Come in and browse our selection of fine wines and cheeses! At Kelley Cellars we pride ourselves in giving you a relaxed shopping experience where you can easily select your wine. You will find:

  • Hundreds of bottles of unique wines, with more than 125 priced below $15.00.
  • Free wine tastings every Saturday!  Each week we will feature different wines from around the world.
  • Kelley Cellars also offers discounts on case purchases (mixed or whole).
  • Private wine tastings available.
The Wine Spectator February issue is titled, “Ultimate Buying Guide”.  This is a recap of the 16,000 wines they tasted during the year.  For a Finance guy turned wine shop owner, this issue provided lots of data to analyze.  Of course, it is most relevant to try to tie their information into what’s happening at our shop.  Well, here’s what I found interesting, with the Wine Spectator stat followed by our Kelley Cellars (KC) stat:

1)      % of wines rated over 95 was 2%: KC 2%

2)      % of wines rated over 90 was 26%: KC 36%

3)      % of wines 85-89 points was 48%: KC 63%

4)      % of wines rated below 85 was 26%: KC < 1%

5)      Average cost of wines 90+ was $67: KC $36

What do these scores really mean?   Well, they are an indicator,  just like

grades are an indicator in school.  Wines rated 85 or better are typically very

good.   The comparisons above are very exciting to us, because we taste a

couple of thousand wines per year ourselves.  Our goals include having all wines

85 points or better, combined with the best prices at their relative quality levels,

and at least 125 wines priced below $15.  Among the best compliments we receive is, “you can’t buy a bad bottle in your shop”.  We’ll keep tasting and working hard to make sure that is always true.

We don’t do this often, but we’d like to share a note we received recently from Michele S.:  “I haven't been able to make it back to Barrington as often as I'd like, so I haven't been by for the tastings in about a year.  You always have such a good selection, though.  I've recently moved from Fort Lauderdale to Washington, DC, and you still rate as the best wine shop hands down.”

We try hard to make this always true, with 400 hand-picked selections, 125 of which are
below $15. Help us get the word out!  The Kelley Cellars referral program provides you with a 15% discount on your next order if a friend or family member comes in, buys some wine, and joins our Frequent Buyer Club/Mailing list.  Your friend gets 15% off their order too!
